Synopsis
Violetta attends a party but feels exhausted and restless in her life as a Parisian courtesan and weakened, expects to soon die. Attending the same party, Alfredo asks after her and proposes a toast, celebrating true love. Violetta is intrigued by his earnest, candid words. When she feels faint everyone withdraws and Violetta tells Alfredo to return the next day. She feels conflicted: she doesn’t want to abandon her way of life, but now also wants to know true love.
Violetta chooses life with Alfredo in the country but they can only afford to move from the city because she is secretly selling off her property. Alfredo discovers this and leaves for Paris to find an alternative. While he is absent, his father convinces Violetta to leave his son (for his son’s sake.) She accepts an invitation to a masked ball and leaves. Alfredo returns and, furious at her apparent betrayal, vows revenge. He attends the same masked ball and wins a fortune from Violetta’s new lover Baron Douphol. While his father watches, Alfredo rages at Violetta.
As Violetta lies dying, she receives a letter from Alfredo’s father, letting her know that he revealed to Alfredo his meddling (and therefore her true intentions.) Alfredo wants to rejoin her. Violetta is uncertain Alfredo will arrive before she dies but when he does, she temporarily regains enough energy for a duet before she draws her final breath.
